Hijab verdict: Karnataka High Court dismisses plea challenging hijab in educational institutions

The High Court of Karnataka has dismissed various petitions challenging a ban on hijab in educational institutions in the state. In its judgment, the High Court also stated that wearing the hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam. A bench of Karnataka High Court comprises of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice JM Khazi stated that no case is made out for invalidating the Order by the Government of February 5.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh: Missile system very reliable and safe

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in an official statement over the inadvertent firing of the missile on March 9 assured that the missile system is very reliable and safe. The Union Minister stated that the government has taken serious note of the incident and a formal high-level inquiry has been ordered. Pakistani Army had earlier said that an Indian projectile had entered Pakistani airspace on March 9, 2022.

As a precaution, COVID vaccination for everyone above 60 and 12-14 years will start from March 16

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that Covid-19 vaccination for children between 12-14 years of age will begin from March 16. The co-morbidity clause for administering precaution doses to senior citizens has also been removed. The precautionary dose will now be administered to all those above the age of 60 years. Earlier, only those above 60 years with co-morbidities were eligible for the precautionary dose.

US to allow Ukrainian refugees, provide weapons to defend against invading Russian force: Biden

US President Joe Biden on Monday (local time) announced to provide Ukraine with weapons against Russia’s military operations. Taking to Twitter, the President also said that America will also allow Ukrainian refugees in the US, and send money, food, and other humanitarian aid to Kyiv. We will make sure Ukraine has weapons to defend against the invading Russian force. We will send money and food and aid to save Ukrainian lives. We will welcome Ukrainian refugees with open arms, he said. Earlier, US President Joe Biden authorized USD 200 million for additional arms and equipment to Ukraine, White House said on Saturday (local time). Today, President Biden authorized USD 200 million for additional arms and equipment to Ukraine. This unprecedented fourth drawdown in less than one year brings the total U.S. security assistance to Ukraine to over USD 1.2 billion since January 2021, the White House said in a tweet. Biden’s decision brings total US security aid provided to Ukraine to USD 1.2 billion since January 2021.

Ukraine’s GDP to shrink by at least 10 percent in 2022 if the war ends soon, fall by 25-35% if the war continues. 

Ukraine’s economy is expected to shrink by 10 per cent in 2022 as a result of Russia’s military operations, Ukrainian media reported citing the International Monetary Fund report. Ukraine’s government continues to function, the banking system is stable and debt payments are viable in the short term, the IMF said, Daily Sabah reported. Daily Sabah further reported that the report prepared ahead of the IMF’s approval of USD 1.4 billion in emergency financing, said Ukraine’s economic output could shrink by 25 per cent to 35 per cent, based on real wartime gross domestic product (GDP) data from Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and other countries at war. In 2022, Ukraine’s GDP will shrink by at least 10 per cent if the war ends soon. If the war continues at the current pace, Ukraine can lose 25-35 per cent of its GDP by the end of the year, The Kyiv Independent reported.

The centre has removed the co-morbidities clause for administering precautionary doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to those above 60 years. The precautionary doses will now be made available for all those aged 60 years and above from March 16.

Rishabh pant scores fastest 50 in Tests for India

Rishabh Pant scored the fastest 50 in Test cricket for India, surpassing Kapil Dev’s record during India’s second test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. Pant scored 50 off 28 deliveries, which is the 13th fastest fifty in Tests in the world. Kapil Dev had held the record previously by scoring 50 off 30 deliveries against Pakistan in 1982.

RIMC to induct Girl cadets for first time in 100 years

The Rashtriya Indian Military College will induct girls cadets from July 2022 for the first time in its 100-years history. The college is set to induct five girl cadets. A total of 568 girls from across the country have given the entrance for the five seats.

Bhagwant Mann resigns as Sangrur MP

Punjab CM-designate Bhagwant Mann submitted his resignation as MP from the Sangrur constituency to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla earlier today. He will be sworn in as the new Punjab Chief Minister on March 16 from the native village of Bhagat Singh and has urged people to come there to witness the swearing-in ceremony.

International Day of Mathematics observed on 14 March

International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is observed globally on the 14th of March every year. It is also known as the Pi Day because the mathematical constant π (pi) can be rounded down to 3.14.It aims to educate people about the essential role of mathematics in science and technology, improve quality of life, empower women and girls, and contribute to sustainable development. This is a relatively new event that was created just a couple of years back. The theme for 2022 IDM is “Mathematics Unites! “. The proclamation of March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics was adopted in the 205th session of the UNESCO’s Executive Council. The day was then adopted in the 40th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in November 2019. Later in 2020, the world celebrated its First International Day of Mathematics on March 14, 2020.

 

Drinking water supply project inaugurated in Nepal, built with Indian Assistance

The drinking water supply project which has been built under Indian grant assistance was inaugurated in Nepal. As per the Indian Embassy in Nepal, this is one of the 75 projects which is being inaugurated in 2022 in Nepal as part of “India @75 Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ which celebrates India’s 75 years of Independence. The drinking water supply project in Nepal has been constructed at a cost of NRs. 42.39 million under India-Nepal development cooperation with the Indian Government’s financial assistance. It is an important project for the Khumjung and Kunde Villages, Solukhumbu for serving clean and safe water to nearly 600 households and schools, government offices, and tourists in this area.

India’s first medical city ‘Indrayani Medicity’ to set up in Maharashtra

The state government of Maharashtra has announced to set up the country’s first medical city named as ‘Indrayani Medicity’ in Pune, to provide all kinds of specialised treatment under one roof. It will come up in 300-acre of land area in Khed taluka of Pune. The project is estimated to attract investment worth over Rs. 10,000 crores. Indrayani Medicity will have hospitals, centres for medical research, pharmaceutical manufacturing, wellness and physiotherapy, and will be the first-of-its-kind city in the country to have all the treatments available at one place. The Medicity will have about 24 separate hospital buildings, each housing one department. The Medicity will not only benefit Pune but will also be useful for people from neighbouring districts who come to the city for better treatment.

PM Narendra Modi dedicates Rashtriya Raksha University in Gandhinagar, Gujarat 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated to the nation a new campus building complex of the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) at Lavad village near Gandhinagar, Gujarat. PM also addressed the first convocation of RRU Gandhinagar as a Chief Guest. The University, which is an Institution of National Importance, commenced its operations from 1st October 2020. Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) was set up to meet the need for high quality trained manpower in various wings of policing, criminal justice and correctional administration. The government set up a national police university named Rashtriya Raksha University by upgrading the Raksha Shakti University which was established by the Government of Gujarat in 2010. The University, which is an Institution of National Importance, commenced its operations from 1st October 2020. The University will develop synergies with the private sector by leveraging knowledge and resources from the industry and would also set up Centres of Excellence in various fields relating to police and security.

First Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal of Indian Railways commissioned

The Asansol Division of Indian Railways has successfully commissioned private siding of Maithan Power Limited at Thaparnagar, Jharkhand, in accordance with the Prime Minister’s vision Gati Shakti and the Ministry of Railways’ policy regarding the Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal or also known as GCT, informed the Ministry of Railways. The coal needed for the power plant was delivered via road, which is estimated to yield 120 inbound coal rakes every month. Somewhere between two to four outward rakes of Fly Ash are expected to be handled from the siding area. This will increase the railways’ monthly earnings by almost Rs. 11 crores.

Tamilnadu Petroproducts became world’s first LAB manufacturing company to get BIS certification

TPL (Tamilnadu Petroproducts Ltd.) is the world’s first linear alkylbenzene (LAB) manufacturing company to be certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). TPL’s ‘Superlab’ brand is one of the most well-known laboratory brands in the country. TPL’s position as the market leader and the only authorised seller of the chemical in India will be bolstered by the certification. LAB can be used to make biodegradable detergent, making it a more sustainable option than conventional detergent formulations.

Ajay Bhushan Pandey appointed as chairman of the NFRA 

Ajay Bhushan Pandey has been appointed as the chairman of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) for a period of 3 years. Pandey, a 1984-batch Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, retired as revenue secretary in February last year. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of former revenue secretary ABP Pandey as the chairperson of NFRA for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years. The NFRA acts as an independent regulator for the auditing profession. The body has powers to review the financial statement of companies, can seek explanations and probe irregularities with respect to accounting and auditing issues. The setting up of the NFRA, envisaged under the Companies Act, 2013, was approved by the Cabinet in May 2018.

Morgan Stanely projects India’s GDP for FY23 at 7.9%

Rating Agency Morgan Stanely has projected India’s GDP growth forecast for 2022-23 (FY23) at 7.9%. This is 50 bps less than its earlier projection due to the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on oil prices. Furthermore, Stanley raised the country’s retail inflation estimate to 6%, meanwhile, current account deficits are seen to widen by 3% of GDP. India is affected through three key channels – higher prices for oil and other commodities; trade, and tighter financial conditions, influencing business/investment sentiment. Analysts at the brokerage also raised their inflation forecast to 6 per cent – the upper end of the tolerance band for the RBI – and flagged stagflation risks because of the ongoing events.

EPFO lowers interest rate on PF deposits to 8.1% for 2021-22

The retirement fund body, Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has slashed the interest rate on provident fund deposits to 8.10% for 2021-22. This rate is 0.4% lower than the previous year. The interest rate on PF deposits was 8.5% in 2020-21 and 2019-20. This is the lowest in more than four decades. EPFO had credited 8.0% as interest rate in 1977-78. Since then, it has been either 8.25% or more. The interest rate of 8.1% has been declared based on EPFO’s estimated income for the year at Rs 76,768 crore and this will leave the retirement fund body with a surplus of Rs 450 crore. The move is expected to hit the earnings of over sixty million EPFO subscribers.

Ex-student protest leader, Gabriel Boric font becomes youngest President of Chile

Gabriel Boric Font has been appointed as the new and 36th President of Chile. The 36-year-old leftist is the youngest leader to hold the office in Chile’s history. He succeeds Sebastián Piñera. Boric will hold the office for the period between 2022-2026. As a student representative, Boric became one of the leading figures of the 2011–2013 Chilean student protests. Boric was twice elected to the Chamber of Deputies representing the Magallanes and Antarctic district, first as an independent candidate in 2013 and then in 2017 as part of the Broad Front, a left-wing coalition he created with several other parties.

Tripura Govt announced “Mukhyamantri Chaa Srami Kalyan Prakalpa” scheme

Tripura Government has announced a special scheme ‘Mukhyamantri Chaa Srami Kalyan Prakalpa’ for tea workers. A special scheme, allotting Rs. 85 crores for its implementation, as a step towards bringing the 7000 tea garden workers of Tripura under the social security net. This special scheme would ensure housing, rations, and financial support to the tea garden workers by integrating the facilities that are entitled to them, by the state government and the central government.


Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurates first drone school at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh 

The Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan jointly inaugurated the first drone school in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. This drone school is one of the five Drone Schools planned to be opened in different cities of Madhya Pradesh. The other four cities are Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Satna. This drone school of Gwalior will not only pave the way for the youth of Madhya Pradesh to move forward by connecting them with technology, but it will also increase employment opportunities. Prabha Narasimhan named as CEO of Colgate-Palmolive India

Prabha Narasimhan has been appointed as the CEO and MD of Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited. She succeeded Ram Raghavan, who has been promoted to the role of President, Enterprise Oral Care, at Colgate Palmolive Company. Prior to this, she was working as executive director of Hindustan Unilever (HUL). Colgate-Palmolive (India) provides oral care products under the ‘Colgate’ brand. It also provides personal care products under the ‘Palmolive’ brand name.

Justice AK Sikri named as Chairperson of Chardham project Committee

The Supreme Court of India has named Justice (retd) AK Sikri as Chairperson of the High-Powered Committee (HPC), of the Chardham project. The previous Chairperson Professor Ravi Chopra had resigned from his post in February 2022, after being appointed as the chairperson of the HPC on August 8, 2019. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant accepted the resignation of Professor Ravi Chopra as chairperson of the committee after he wrote a letter in January wishing to relinquish his post.

Debasish Panda named as Chairman of IRDAI

Debasish Panda has been appointed as the chairman of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). He is a former financial services secretary. The post of Chairman of IRDAI was lying vacant since May 2021 when Subhash Chandra Khuntia completed his term. Panda, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, retired as financial services secretary in January this year after a two-year stint. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Panda’s appointment as chairperson of the insurance regulator initially for a period of three years from the assumption of charge. The appointment of IRDAI chairman comes nearly 9 months after the vacancy was created following Subhash Chandra Khuntia completing his term in May last year.

Islamic State confirms death of Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi in US raid

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have officially confirmed the death of their leader Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi in US raids in north-western Syrian town on February 3, 2022. The terror group in an audio message named their new leader- Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi. The IS spokesperson confirmed that the new head was chosen by their slain leader.

WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine. 

WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine, which was approved by the Union Cabinet recently, will be the first and only global outpost centre for traditional medicine across the globe. The centre will be established in India under the Ministry of AYUSH.

South Korea’s Next President Yoon Suk-yeol elected

Yoon Suk Yeol has been elected as South Korea’s new President, after winning the South Korean Presidential Elections 2022 by an extremely close margin. Yoon Suk Yeol received 48.6 percent of the votes, while his rival Lee Jae-myung received 47.8 percent of the votes, the margin being less than 1 percent.

Haryana’s CM announced ‘Sushma Swaraj Award’ for women

Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, while presenting the state budget, has announced a ‘Sushma Swaraj Award’ for women for their significant achievements or contribution in different walks of life in the international and national spheres. The Sushma Swaraj Award will carry an award money of Rs 5 lakh along with a commendation. Sushma Swaraj was a lawyer of the Supreme Court as well as an Indian politician. She was a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, served as India’s Minister of External Affairs during the first Narendra Modi government (2014–2019). After Indira Gandhi, she was the second woman to occupy this position.

Karnataka government launched the ‘Women@Work’ program

The government of Karnataka has launched the ‘Women@Work’ program to provide five lakh jobs within 2026 to women with necessary employable skills. The program aims to focus on the efforts of corporate programs on attracting women workforce. It has been developed by Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) in association with KTECH, Karnataka Skill Development Corporation. It will act as an enabler for women to actively participate and join the workforce through industry upskilling. All efforts are being made to provide 5,000 jobs for women as part of the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission and added that the government is keen to actualise this mission in the coming days.

Ashwani Bhatia (SBI MD) appointed as an SEBI member

The cabinet has appointed Ashwani Bhatia, managing director (MD) of the State Bank of India (SBI), as a whole-time member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). According to some sources, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also approved Ashwani Bhatia’s appointment as a whole-time member of SEBI for three years from the date of his assumption of the command. According to the sources, with Ashwani Bhatia’s appointment as a Whole-time member, the Securities and Exchange Board of India now only needs to appoint one Whole time member. In August 2020, Ashwani Bhatia, who will be retiring in May 2022, that is this year, was promoted to the post of managing director of State Bank of India.

NaBFID to be regulated as AIFI under RBI Act

Reserve Bank of India has announced that National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) will be regulated and supervised by it as an All India Financial Institution (AIFI) under the RBI Act, 1934. NaBFID will be regulated and supervised by RBI as an AIFI under Sections 45L and 45N of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. Presently RBI has four AIFIs under it namely EXIM Bank, NABARD, NHB and SIDBI. NaBFID will be the fifth AIFI under RBI. NaBFID has been set up as a Development Financial Institution (DFI) to support the development of long-term infrastructure financing in India.

Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited, a health insurance company launched “Star Women Care Insurance Policy”. It is a woman-centric comprehensive health cover specially designed to protect the healthcare needs of women at every stage of their lives. The policy can be purchased through premiums that can be paid in quarterly or half-yearly instalments, and this policy can also be taken for 1 year, 2 year or 3-year terms. The Star Women Care Insurance Policy is available as both an individual policy and a floater policy. Individual Sum– Insured only for females aged between 18 years and 75 years. Floater Sum Insured – Adult 18 years to 75 years with at least one female in the family along with the spouse and dependent children.

CRISIL projected GDP growth forecast at 7.8% for 2022-23

Domestic rating agency CRISIL retained its real GDP growth forecast at 7.8% for the fiscal year 2023, as compared with the 8.5% projected in the Economic Survey. FM Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget proposals focused on loosening the purse strings by boosting capital expenditure and going slow on fiscal consolidation are aimed in the right direction. The agency expects the nominal growth to come at 12-13%, higher than the 11.1% Budget Estimate, and the headline inflation to average 5.2%.

India finishes at the top in 2022 ISSF World Cup

India has taken first place in the medal standings at the ISSF World Cup 2022 in Cairo, organised by the International Shooting Sport Federation. By winning a total of seven medals, the Indian team took first place in the medals tally, with four gold, two silver, and one bronze. Norway took second place in the medals tally with six medals (three gold, one silver, and two bronze). France came in third place with three gold medals out of a total of twenty.

Famous Golfer Tiger Woods inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame

Famous Golfer, Tiger Woods was formally inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The 46-year-old Woods entered the storied hall as part of the Class of 2022 along with retired PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, U.S. Women’s Open champion Susie Maxwell Berning and Marion Hollins, a U.S. Women’s Amateur champion and golf course architect who was recognised posthumously. During his career, Woods has broken many golfing records, establishing himself as arguably the greatest golfer of all time. He has won 15 majors, surpassed only by Jack Nicklaus’ 18,  as well as a joint-record 82 wins on the PGA Tour.

March 10 marks the International Day of Women Judges. UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5 is Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls. Their goal is to achieve progress across all Development goals and to add a gender perspective to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

IMF board approves $1.4 billion emergency support for Ukraine

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved $1.4 billion in emergency support for Ukraine to finance expenditures and shore up the balance of payments. Ukraine has turned to financing from allies and international institutions to support its economy after the Russian invasion began on February 24. The disbursement under the IMF’s Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), equivalent to 50% of Ukraine’s quota in the IMF, will help fund urgent spending needs in the short term, while helping to catalyze financing from other partners.

Vote counting for assembly elections in UP, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa, Punjab, and Uttarakhand to be taken up tomorrow

All the necessary preparations have been finalized for the counting of votes in Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. In addition, the counting of the votes for the simultaneous By-poll to Majuli Assembly Seat in Assam will also be taken up together. The counting process will commence at 8.00 AM. The counting trends and the results of five legislative assemblies will be available on the website of the Election Commission and will be updated every few minutes. Amid the ongoing COVID pandemic and to ensure complete COVID safe arrangements during the counting, the Election Commission of India has rolled out the strict COVID protocols for the Counting Day.

Union Cabinet approves MoU signed between ICMR and Oxford University.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the MoU signed between Oxford University and the Indian Council of Medical Research. The MoU aims at capacity building for the Indian scientists and researchers, collection of data compliant with the international standards and regulatory requirements. Both the parties have also agreed on exchange and share ideas on three-vector borne diseases in the elimination phase and emerging infections. It will also work to develop a three-year work plan on capacity strengthening, training on data management, exchange of research fellows, among others.

Cabinet approves setting up of National Land Monetization Corporation

The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the setting up of the National Land Monetization Corporation for undertaking the surplus land monetization. NLMC will be a wholly-owned government company with an initial authorized share capital of Rs. 5,000 crores and paid-up share capital of Rs. 150 crores. It will undertake the monetization of surplus land and building the assets of Central Public Sector Enterprises and other government agencies. NLMC is also expected to own, hold, manage and monetize the surplus land and the building assets of CPSEs under the closure.

FIH Men’s Hockey pro league matches between India and Germany postponed

FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League matched between India and Germany have been postponed due to the high number of COVID cases affecting the German team. The matches were scheduled to be played on March 12 and 13, 2022, in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. As per an official release, the International Hockey Federation, India and Germany have already been working together to find alternative dates. Hungary elects first-ever female president

The Hungarian parliament has elected Katalin Novak, a close ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as the EU member’s first-ever female president. Novak, who most recently served as a minister for family policy, portrayed her election as a victory for women. She was elected to the mostly ceremonial role by 137 votes to 51 in the parliament dominated by Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party ahead of opposition challenger Peter Rona, an economist. Novak will succeed Janos Ader, a co-founder of Orban’s governing right-wing Fidesz party who has held the job since 2012. She will take office after Ader’s term expires May 10.

Yoon Suk Yeol elected as new South Korean President 

Yoon Suk-yeol has been declared as the winner of the 2022 South Korean presidential election to be elected as the new President of the country. He is scheduled to assume office as president on May 10, 2022, for a fixed term of five years. Yoon Suk-yeol will succeed incumbent President Moon Jae-in. With more than 98 per cent of the ballots counted, Yoon had 48.6 per cent of the votes against his rival Lee Jae-Myung’s 47.8 per cent. Yoon is to take office in May and serve a single five-year term as leader of the world’s 10th-largest economy.
