What is ITI?

ITI or the Industrial Training Institutes and Industrial Training Centres are the centres providing technical training, established under the Ministry of Labour, Union Government of India.

The ITIs are the organisations run by the government, while the ITCs are run by private organisations. Both provide technical training provided after your school education. In 2002, 1800 ITIs provided 373000 training locations and 2850 ITCs with 305000 locations.

ITI releases the application forms for different courses during the month of July. Candidates must clear the entrance exam to get the admission for the course. ITI courses are of two types- Engineering and Non-Engineering.

Each course have a duration of 6 months and would last up to 2 years, based on the syllabus set by ITI or the rules of DGET (Directorate General of Employment & Training). Duration of ITI courses under Engineering is more than those under non-engineering.

After the completion of the course and the training, candidates will have to take the AITT or the All India Trade Test, which includes practical as well as the theoretical exam. Candidates passing the exam would be awarded NTC (National Trade Certificate) and would be qualified to get a job in the desired field.
